Advantages and Disadvantages of 2021 Honda Odyssey

Overview

The 2021 Honda Odyssey may suggest that it'll transform your next road trip into a grand adventure, but its true forte is day-to-day practicality. Its roomy and flexible inner cabin can transport not only kids but also cargo (or both) with ease--and thanks to an array of creative features designed to simplify family life, this vehicle has bagged itself the Editors' Choice award!

Not only does the Odyssey look far more attractive than you would think, but its V-6 engine is also incredibly smooth and powerful for merging onto highways or passing other vehicles. Honda ensures that all of their safety features are included in every model of the Odyssey; however, rivals like the Chrysler Pacifica and Toyota Sienna have similar offerings with an optional addition of all-wheel drive.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Fleet-footed, efficient, and polished, the Odyssey's powertrain is a sweetheart that requires zero compromises. The Odyssey changes direction crisply, and from behind the wheel it's easy to forget you're piloting a three-row van. The steering is direct and the effort is light, but more feedback from the road would be welcome.

Driving enthusiasts won't rave—it's still a minivan, after all—but the Odyssey is the best-driving minivan, and its nimbleness makes it competent in corners and easy to drive on narrow roads. Our Elite test van's ride wasn't as compliant as that of our long-term Pacifica, but its standard 19-inch wheels could be partly to blame. Our EX-L test vehicle wore 18-inch wheels and seemed better-suited to pockmarked Michigan roads. Over most road surfaces, the Odyssey displays a comfortable ride, and few passengers will complain.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The 2021 Odyssey not only meets the EPA's rating of 19 mpg city and 28 highway, but our real-world testing surpasses that with a stunning 30 mpg! For comparison, the Toyota Sienna AWD comes in at 27mpg while our Pacifica managed 33 - proving why this Honda is such an outstanding choice for drivers.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2021 Odyssey has been awarded a five-star crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), yet was unfortunately not deemed as an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) Top Safety Pick. Thankfully, Honda offers its full suite of driver assistance technology, named Honda Sensing and found on all models, to ensure your safety during travel - regardless if you own an older or newer model year rendered by IIHS.

Is A Honda Odyssey a reliable car?

We expect the 2023 Odyssey will have about average reliability when compared to the average new car. This prediction is based on data from 2020, 2021 and 2022 models.

What are the problems with Honda Odyssey?

Common complaints also include oil leaks from the engine block due to a porous engine block casting. Clunking noises and excessive vehicle vibrations caused by a broken front engine mount were also reported by 1999-2005 Odyssey owners.

Why is Honda discontinuing the Odyssey?

“It's discontinued globally, it's been a great car for us.” The closure of the plant is due to Honda realigning its global manufacturing operations ahead of its transition to selling only zero-emissions vehicles by 2040.
